We aspire to be the champions
Mexico and Villarreal’s attacker Giovani Dos Santos doesn’t hesitate to say that his country’s goal in the World Cup is to make it all the way to the final, and is convinced that the group is stronger than ever, ahead of the tournament.
Mexico had to fight hard for their spot in the World Cup, as they were forced to play in a play-off qualifier against New Zealand to seal their place in Brazil. Giovani believes the experience made them stronger.
“In the qualifying it was made clear for us that no team today is easy, and you have to work well in the matches to achieve a good result. Obviously that [qualifying] brought us closer together and today we know we’re stronger than before.”
Giovani is also one of the ten players in Mexico’s World Cup squad who won the Olympic Gold in London in 2012, and also believes that the team have natural winners among them.
“There’s people who have a winning mentality”, he said. “There are people who have grown with different titles, people that have won the u-17 World Cup [Peru, 2005], the Olympic Gold, and there’s a good generation to think about the important titles.”
“As the coach said, the goal is to reach the final. In reality, we have to go match by match, but if you asked how far we aspire to go, I think we aspire to be the Champions”, the Villarreal forward concluded.
Giovani, who recently scored with Mexico proving his good moment, is one of the most skillful players in the Mexican squad and called to be the offensive reference next to Oribe Peralta. Friday 13th against Cameroon will be the first test for the Mexican National Team.
